In the fall of 2016 we introduced a new one-to-one Chromebook program with the class of 2023. Over time, this program will grow to include all Country Day Middle School students.
As you might know, for the past six years we have had a very successful iPad program in grades 6-8. During this time, we made several modifications to our program in order to better meet the needs of the school’s educational goals. In doing so, it became clear that while the iPad has many great features, it also has some key limitations. Specifically, over the years, demand from students and faculty alike has grown for both a physical keyboard and a device that supports Flash animation. It has also become clear that our existing iPad program does not sufficiently or easily backup student data.
We believe that the Chromebook will better address the demands of our educational program. We are not alone. In recent years, tech trends show a clear movement towards Chromebooks by the national education community. A Chromebook looks like a laptop but runs a simplified operating system based on the Google Chrome browser. If you have used Chrome to browse the Internet before, you can use a Chromebook.
Other schools that have made the switch have experienced better device management, file organization, and equipment durability. Many technology blogs have also started promoting Chromebooks as an alternative to traditional laptops.
Country Day, as well as many other schools, uses Google Apps for Education (GAFE) to provide many online services to its students. This includes email services as well as all the features provided by Google Drive, including online word processing, spreadsheets, multimedia presentation, collaboration, and cloud backup accessible from any device in the world. The Chromebook offers much better support for all these Google Apps than the iPad.
We are excited about this new endeavor and will continue to provide updates to you. In the meantime, please learn more about Chromebooks and the ChromeOS here: https://www.google.com/chromebook/about/
