Can they take the iPad home?
Yes! Not only can the students take the iPad home, it is recommended. Students are required to keep their iPad on their person during the school day which requires it to be brought home at the end of the day.
How long should it charge?
Please refer to our article on charging the iPad:
Charging: How do I care for my iPad battery?
Can we use our own (home) AppleID on the school iPad so we can install apps we use at home?
No, the iPad for use by the student is still school property and therefore is managed by the school. The apps each student needs will be installed prior to distribution each school year.
What do we do if the iPad breaks?
If the iPad has a damaged screen, please see our article Cracked Screen.
For any other anomalies, make sure that the iPad is backed up (See: How should I back up my data?) so all information, saved images, and created documents are saved.
Contact the Technology Department or drop the device off.
What is the difference between a "broken screen" and a "cracked screen"?
SCDS has a policy that it will automatically repair any iPad that poses a health/safety risk. Loose or exposed edges on a broken glass display meets this criteria. If the crack is small we recommend a screen protector to minimize additional cracks.
If the iPad is broken, can we repair it ourselves?
Student iPads provided by SCDS are purchased through a lease. The lease states that all repairs are to be completed by Apple Inc. to maintain as to not void the warranty. Many 3rd party shops do not use original manufacturer parts, or are Apple Certified. SCDS has Apple trained technicians on-site to aid in repairs. Apple does not authorize SCDS or the Apple store to do "repairs" on iPads. Instead, Apple replaces broken iPad devices with a remanufactured like-device.
Repair costs charged by Apple are forwarded on to the family of the student.
The iPad is broken, but my child still needs to complete their work.
Most of the content necessary for your student to complete their work is located on either Dropbox or in their Google Drive. Both of these services are available on any Internet connected device. If for whatever reason the school iPad is not available you or your child can access http://scdsstudent.org.
Why can’t i just buy a replacement, or a newer model?
In order to maintain uniformity, all students in a grade level are supplied with the same device. Uniformity allows for an "even playing field" for all students. All school supplied iPads are pre-loaded with the necessary apps for their respective grade. Some of the apps are only available to educational institutions, or connect to a unique school account. School devices also have the support of the school's technology department.
What do I do if the iPad is missing?
If the iPad is missing, we ask that the student retrace their steps as best they can. If it cannot be located, please contact the technology department where we might be able to utilize inventory tacking methods.
